School Profile

The Walworth Barbour American International School in Israel is a private, American curriculum, English language school located in Even Yehuda, a residential community 18 to 20 kilometers north of Tel Aviv. Established under the auspices of the American Embassy almost 40 years ago with only 22 students, the school has a current enrollment of 533 students, grades K-12, and a faculty and staff of over 100.

The campus comprises seven buildings: an Elementary, Middle and High School, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, a performing arts hall with a 380 seat auditorium, a library and administration building with many sports fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, and a swimming pool.

The student body represents about 50 nationalities. Approximately 33% of our students are Americans. Approximately 10% of our students are Israelis. Many of our families are in Israel with the diplomatic corps, but we also have a substantial number of families here with multi-national companies. The faculty consists of 75 teachers and administrators, most of whom are of American origin. Approximately twenty percent are Israelis and another twenty percent come from the U.K., Australia, South Africa and other countries. Two-thirds of our staff members are permanent residents of Israel, and the remainder are U.S. hires. Over forty percent of the staff has advanced degrees beyond their bachelors.

AIS was recently re- accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (USA) for the period of May 1, 2009 until May 1, 2016, and also received the International Credential, which affirms that AIS is "effectively advancing the quality of the international educational experience it offers its students." Accreditation is based on certain criteria and characteristics of AIS which reflect our excellence. The curriculum is a comprehensive American curriculum, implemented with materials and texts purchased from U.S. publishers. The teacher-pupil ratio is 1:9, reflecting our commitment to small classes. Tuition of approximately $16,000 - $20,000 per annum generates revenues in excess of $6,000,000, which support reasonable salaries and benefits and excellent instructional resources.

Organizationally, AIS is a K to grade 12 school. Common philosophical underpinnings unite all grade levels and subject areas. For day-to-day operations, we are structured in three levels, elementary school (K-5), middle school (6-8), and high school (9-12).
