Environment Committee

Hi, my name is Hye Ryoung Rhee, and I’ll be chairing the Environment Committee for the upcoming TIMEMUN ’10. I was born in Seoul, Korea, but have spent over half of my life abroad - a total of four years in the States (one year in Utah, another in Massachusetts, and two years in Georgia) and six years in Israel. I joined the Model United Nations as a freshman at WBAIS, and have been involved in the program ever since – in December of 2006, I represented the United States in the Environment Committee of Paris Model United Nations; in February and December of 2007, I worked as member of the press in TIMEMUN and PAMUN, respectively; in February 2008, I worked as part of the administrative staff in TIMEMUN; and in February 2009, I represented Turkey in the Environment Committee for TIMEMUN. Since my childhood, I’ve always been characterized as a “shy” student who rarely speaks in class, but through involvement in MUN over the past four years, I was able to more or less overcome such sense of fear of speaking in front of a large group and articulate my thoughts effectively regardless of the size of the audience. With this said, though, I cannot neglect the fact that MUN has also contributed significantly to my awareness of the world around me by opening my eyes to various issues ranging from those concerning the environment to human rights. Growing up in a diplomatic family, I’ve always been exposed to world issues through the media as well as through experience, and MUN served as a critical step leading me to go beyond the scope of simply “knowing” about the issues to think of ways to “resolve” them. I sincerely hope that through discussing the issues presented in the Environment Committee of TIMEMUN ’10, we’ll all be able to open our eyes to and develop a genuine concern for the problems surrounding our environment today. If you have any specific questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at u10hrhee@wbais.org. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you all soon!
